Language, Like Wine, Evolves With Those Who Cherish It

1. November 2025

Every so often, a milestone comes along that makes you pause not because it changes everything overnight but because it reminds you how far you have come and how much further there is to go.

For me, publishing my first scientific paper in collaboration with Dr Professor Heber and Allison Creed,Ph.D has been one of those moments.

As a Champagne winemaker and lifelong student of the sensory world this achievement is both humbling and deeply motivating.

Publishing my first scientific paper marks an important milestone not just in my career but in my personal journey as a lifelong learner. Graduation from Brighton University annex Plumpton may still be far in the distance yet I have come to realise that if we stop reading, reflecting and questioning we slowly fade away from the critical knowledge that keeps our minds alive.

It’s humbling to see how learning like winemaking is never finished it simply matures over time.

As a Champagne winemaker this publication represents more than research it’s a continuation of curiosity. It’s a reminder that education doesn’t end with a diploma, it deepens every time we open a book, explore a vineyard or exchange ideas.

Sometimes, it’s in the quiet moments between the vines or during a late-night tasting that inspiration truly strikes the kind that no classroom can teach.

There is no time to return to university right now as work in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger has stretched longer than I ever imagined but that does not  mean learning must stop. Keep educating yourself until you die, that’s how we stay awake to the world.

Every harvest teaches me something new about patience, resilience and the art of listening to both the land and the people who share its story.

I still remember sitting on the other side of the desk, a student of sensory science under Dr. Professor Heber, completely intrigued by aroma, taste, and flavour. Today, I am honoured to weave that same curiosity into my work to connect science with the art of Champagne and to qualify quality not just for myself but for those who enjoy and interpret wine in their own language.

It’s a full-circle feeling from student to contributor  proof that every lecture, every note taken eventually finds its place in the real world.

This paper, “Wine and Conversation: Tracing Innovation in Wine Metaphors”, is a small but meaningful step in understanding how the words we use shape the wines we love and as I continue to explore this balance between craft and cognition I hold close a simple truth.

The deeper we understand language, the more deeply we understand wine and ourselves.

I may not be sitting in a lecture room these days but the pursuit of knowledge feels more alive than ever. The cellar, the vineyard and the pages of research have all become extensions of the same classroom. If there is one lesson this journey keeps teaching me, it is that curiosity ages beautifully just like wine.

So keep learning, keep tasting and keep asking questions.

After all, the greatest vintages and the greatest ideas are those that continue to evolve.

“Language, like wine, evolves with those who cherish it.”

I am Yvonne Christensen, an entrepreneur, mother of five daughters (yes, five!), wife, carer, photographer, and world traveler. I was born in the United Kingdom, however, my roots lie in Nigeria, where both of my parents were born. I have lived in several countries apart from the UK, including Germany, Denmark, and most recently, Switzerland.

I often think of myself as a nomad, roaming and learning as I travel around the globe. My children have been the center of my life, however, now that they are living their adult lives, I have decided it is time for me to explore and share my adventures with all of you who have common interests and passions through my blog — YSC Life.
